That Fair-Traded Taste
Something delicious, organic and fair-traded has been falling into your Co-op’s produce bins this week. Doubtless you’ve seen the Equal Exchange logo, on your tea or coffee grounds. For over 20 years, they’ve been on the international distribution front lines, bringing you food that tastes better because its cultivators were paid well for their labor. Similar to our model, they’re a worker-owned co-op, based in West Bridgewater, MA. Equal Exchange facilitates the delivery quite a few organic foods, from teas to nuts, and now even bananas, under the conviction that helping the little guys can change the world. If you see that logo, it means you’re eating something good.
Meanwhile, remember what Val was just saying about avocados? Well, his week saw the introduction of fair-traded avocados, through the efforts of Fairtrasa, an organization with parallel intentions. Their work over the last decade has empowered small farmers in Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Southeast Asia to sell their produce on an American and European scale, without fear of shady business. We’re very excited to begin selling organic Mexican Fairtrasa-facilitated avocados, with an equally delicious year-round availability.
